Console Table Styling Made Easy

Today, we’re diving into a little corner of our homes that often sparks a touch of styling anxiety: the console table.

You know the one – sitting there, sometimes feeling a bit bare, other times a little cluttered, leaving you wondering if you’re “doing it right.” And somehow… it just ends up with keys, old mail, a candle that’s been burned down to the wick or with stuff of different heights that just don’t feel right when you look at them.

It’s that awkward in-between: too much and not enough, all at once. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I am someone who has spent way too many evenings rearranging vases and wondering if the flowers in the vase were too much— but the good news? Styling a beautiful, balanced console is a lot easier (and more fun) than it seems. Over time, I’ve learned a few simple tricks that actually work — and make your space feel cozy, layered, and intentional.

Whether you’re styling an entryway, a hallway, or that random space behind your sofa, these tips will help you make your console table look like a styled moment.

Start with a Blank Slate

Before you style anything, clear the entire surface. Not just the clutter — everything.

When you strip it down to its bare bones, you start to see the shape and proportions you’re working with. This is your canvas. Don’t skip this step — even if you’re just restyling a spot that already looks “fine.”

Styling tip: Snap a quick photo of your console empty and after each layer — it helps you see balance more clearly.

Follow the “3-Layer Rule”

Here’s my go-to formula that makes console styling almost foolproof:

Layer 1: Height — Use a lamp, tall vase, or stacked frames to add visual structure.

A pair of beautiful lamps or a single lamp , instantly adds ambiance and functionality. They invite you to linger, making the space feel more lived-in and inviting. Choose lamps with shades that diffuse light beautifully, casting a soft, gentle glow.

Bring the outdoors in! A tall vase filled with a few branches or a simple, understated floral arrangement adds life, organic texture, and a lovely touch of nature.

Layer 2: Texture — Stack books, use a runner, place a bowl or a tray to ground the styling.

Stack a few of your favorite books – perhaps a beautiful coffee table book on a topic you love, or a collection of novels. Books instantly add warmth, intellect, and a sense of “home.”

Layer 3: Something organic Branches, a plant, or dried stems soften everything and bring it to life.

Add Something Personal:

This is what turns “styled” into soulful.

Collected Treasures: This is where those unique finds from your travels, a beloved souvenir, or a piece inherited from a family member shine. A small sculpture, a handcrafted bowl, or a vintage camera can add so much character.

Photos: Framed photos of loved ones or special memories are a powerful way to inject personality and warmth. Choose frames that complement your home’s style but don’t feel the need for them all to match perfectly. A mix can add beautiful visual interest.

Whether it’s a framed photo, a ceramic piece from your travels, or a vintage find you adore — add something that tells a little story. It doesn’t have to be meaningful to anyone else. Just a little detail that makes you smile every time you walk by.

Give It Room to Breathe:

Not every inch needs to be filled. In fact, the best styling usually has space for the eye to rest.

Bonus Tips for Renters & Small Spaces

You don’t need to drill into your walls or invest in custom cabinetry to create a beautiful console moment. Here are some renter- and budget-friendly ideas:

  • Use leaning art instead of hanging frames
  • Style a drawer console with pretty baskets or boxes for hidden storage
  • Drape a textured runner or linen cloth for an instant cozy touch
  • Try flameless candles or battery-operated fairy lights for warmth
  • Use command hooks for seasonal garlands or hanging lanterns
